Leadership Spotlight: Zach Zertuche
Zach Zertuche, Western Regional Vice President of Operations, brings a very robust transportation background extending back 23 years to Roadrunner Freight. Prior to his career in the industry, Zach was in the United States Navy. He then began his career at UPS package and spent his career working for some of the largest players in transportation, such as YRC (previously known as Yellow Freight), Conway and XPO. The bulk of Zach’s career was spent at Conway where he worked as both Service Center Manager and District Manager until he joined the Roadrunner Freight family in 2019.
In between transitions, Zach wrapped up his studies and earned a teaching degree. This educational background shaped Zach into the leader he is today. Although he never taught in a traditional classroom, he uses the skills he gained during his education to teach, train, and develop his team.
Leaving His Mark
Although Zach has worked with many industry leading transportation companies, he saw something unique about Roadrunner Freight from the beginning. He quickly realized he was going to have plenty of opportunities to leave his mark on Roadrunner Freight and has been doing so since joining the team.
Zach enjoys the challenge that comes along with making a difference and is especially fond of his ability to truly establish the culture he wants to be surrounded by. “Your impact is definitely felt,” stated Zach.
Zach, a teacher by both nature and trade, spends his days guiding his team in a calm and precise manor. What he enjoys most about his role with Roadrunner Freight is that his team looks to him for guidance and being the teacher he is to support them in any way he can. “People know that I value them and that I want the best for them, and I teach them that way,” says Zach when asked about his leadership style.
Accomplishments & Advice
One of Zach’s most proud accomplishments at Roadrunner Freight is the role he played in the pay progression initiative for dock workers. Roadrunner Freight strives to ensure our team members feel valued, and this is just one example of how important it is to Zach for his team members to feel valued.
Zach’s advice to those beginning their career in the industry is to never stop listening and to never stop looking for learning opportunities. “Many people make the mistake of thinking they know it all, but you’re never too good to learn,” stated Zach.
